Bebeklerde gözyaşı kanalı tıkanıklığı: masaj ve tedaviBlocked tear duct in babies: massage and treatment

Temel BilgiBasics 10 dk okuma14 min read Ekim 2026October 2026

Belirtileri nelerdir?

  • Sürekli sulanma — Gözün içi hep ıslak görünür, gözyaşı yanağa taşabilir. Çoğu zaman doğumdan sonraki ilk haftalarda başlar.
  • Çapak ve yapışık kirpikler — Özellikle uykudan uyanınca sarımsı akıntı ve kurumuş çapaklar görülür.
  • Gözün beyazı genellikle temizdir — Gözde kızarıklık yoksa tablo çoğunlukla basit bir kanal tıkanıklığıdır.
  • Soğuk algınlığında artış — Burun tıkandığında sulanma ve çapak belirginleşebilir.
  • Tek ya da iki gözde — Çoğu zaman tek gözdedir; yaklaşık beş bebekten birinde iki gözde birden görülür.

Işıktan kaçıyor, gözü bulanık mı? Bu ACİL bir durumdur

Her göz sulanması kanal tıkanıklığı değildir.

Antibiyotik her zaman gerekmezAntibiyotikli damla kanalı açmaz.

20 kez tekrarlayınBastırıp bırakmayı her seferinde 20 kez tekrarlayın; akıntı gelirse silin.
Günde 3 kez sürdürünMasajı günde 3 kez, her seferinde 20 kez yapın; hekiminizin önerdiği süre boyunca sürdürün.

Masajda dikkat edilecekler

İNTERAKTİF SİMÜLASYONINTERACTIVE SIMULATION Soğuk Algınlığında SulanmaWatery Eye During a Cold

Has your baby’s eye been watery since birth, with crusty, stuck-together lashes in the morning? The most common cause is a blocked tear duct. It is very common in babies and often clears up on its own. In this article you will find out why the blockage happens, what you can do at home, how to do the massage, when other treatments are needed, and why children’s eyes may water during a cold.

What is the tear duct, and why does it get blocked?

After moistening the surface of the eye, tears drain through two tiny openings at the inner corner of the eye (the puncta). They first collect in the tear sac and then flow down the tear duct into the nose. That is why our nose runs when we cry.

At the end of the tear duct, where it opens into the nose, there is a thin membrane that should open on its own before birth. In some babies, this membrane stays closed after birth. When tears cannot drain, they pool in the eye and spill onto the cheek. Tears that sit in the sac also thicken into sticky discharge that dries into crusts.

This is a delay in development. It affects about 5 to 20 in every 100 babies, and in about 9 out of 10 babies the duct opens on its own by age 1.

What are the symptoms?

  • Constant watering — The eye always looks wet, and tears may spill onto the cheek. It usually starts in the first weeks after birth.
  • Crusts and stuck-together lashes — Yellowish discharge and dried crusts are seen, especially on waking.
  • The white of the eye is usually clear — If the eye is not red, it is most often a simple blocked duct.
  • Worse with a cold — When the nose is blocked, watering and crusting can become more noticeable.
  • One or both eyes — It is usually in one eye; about one in five babies has it in both eyes.

Avoiding light, cloudy eye? This is an EMERGENCY

Not every watery eye is a blocked tear duct. Congenital glaucoma (raised pressure in the eye), a rare but urgent disease, can also make the eye water. If watering comes with any of the following, it is an emergency:

  • Discomfort in light, turning the eyes away from light
  • Squeezing the eye shut or blinking a lot
  • The front of the eye looking cloudy, dull or hazy
  • The eye looking larger than usual, or the two eyes looking different in size

With these signs, don’t wait at home thinking it’s a blocked duct; have your baby seen by an eye doctor the same day. In congenital glaucoma, early treatment protects sight.

What can you do at home?

The first step of treatment happens at home: keeping the eye clean and tear sac massage. A few simple rules also help.

Keep the eye cleanWipe away crusts with a clean cotton pad moistened in cooled boiled water, from the inner corner of the eye outward. Use a separate cotton pad for each eye.
Hands firstWash your hands with soap before and after touching your baby’s eye; keep your nails short.
Only use what your doctor recommendsDon’t put anything in your baby’s eye that your doctor hasn’t recommended, such as breast milk, tea or chamomile water.
Antibiotics aren’t always neededAntibiotic drops don’t open the duct. If there are signs of infection, such as redness of the white of the eye or heavy pus-like discharge, your doctor may prescribe them for a short time.

Tear sac massage

For the massage, you press on the tear sac with your little finger, toward the nose, and then let go. When you press, the fluid in the sac is pushed down the duct; the pressure this creates can help the thin membrane at the end of the duct to open. You don’t need to slide your finger down; pressing on the sac is enough. Doing it in the right spot and regularly matters: in a study published in 2026, among babies under 1 year old who had regular massage at least 3 times a day, the rate of improvement after three months was no lower than in babies who had probing.

Wash your handsWash and dry your hands; keep your little fingernail short.
Clean the eyeWith a cotton pad moistened in cooled boiled water, wipe from the inner corner outward.
Find the right spotPlace the tip of your little finger just inside the inner corner, where the eyelids meet, on the nose side.
Press toward the nosePress on the sac gently but firmly toward the nose, then let go; no need to slide your finger.
Repeat 20 timesRepeat the press-and-release 20 times each session; wipe away any discharge.
Do it 3 times a dayMassage 3 times a day, 20 presses each time; keep going for as long as your doctor advises.

Things to keep in mind

Little finger, toward the noseBecause your baby’s face is small, use your little finger. Press just inside the corner where the two eyelids meet, toward the bone of the nose, not on the eyeball.
Discharge is normalSome yellowish discharge may come out of the inner corner while you press; this shows the sac is emptying. Wipe it away with a clean cotton pad.
Be regularLinking the massage to daily routines such as feeding, bath time or diaper changes makes it easier to remember.
Both eyes are fineIf both eyes are blocked, you can massage both sides.
No massage if it’s red and swollenIf there is a red, swollen lump at the inner corner of the eye that hurts to touch, stop the massage and see your doctor the same day.

Treatment options

Treatment goes step by step, and for most babies the first step is enough. The timing and method are decided together with your doctor, based on your baby’s situation.

Watchful waiting, cleaning and massageThis is enough for most babies during the first year. In a study of babies aged 6–10 months, two-thirds of blockages cleared up without surgery within the next 6 months.
Antibiotic drops (if needed)Used only when there are signs of infection, and only for a short time; they don’t open the duct.
ProbingRecommended if watering and crusting continue despite massage. A thin, blunt-tipped probe is passed through the tear opening into the duct to open the membrane. At around age 1, it is usually done under brief general anesthesia (the child is put to sleep), and most children go home the same day. In younger babies, before age 1, early probing in the doctor’s office with numbing eye drops is also an option; you and your doctor decide together on the right timing. In studies, the first probing solves the problem in about 75–90% of children.
Repeat probing, silicone tube or balloonIf the first probing isn’t enough, it can be repeated; a thin silicone tube can be placed in the duct for a few months, or the duct can be widened with a small balloon.
Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR)Rarely, if other methods don’t work, an operation is done to create a new drainage path between the tear sac and the nose.

Why does the eye water during a cold?

Some children’s eyes water, and may even get crusty, only when they have a cold, and clear up once they recover. This is because a child’s face is still developing.

İNTERAKTİF SİMÜLASYONINTERACTIVE SIMULATION Soğuk Algınlığında SulanmaWatery Eye During a Cold

The tear duct opens inside the nose; its mouth sits on the lining that covers the inside of the nose. In upper respiratory infections such as a cold, this lining swells, and the nose runs and gets blocked. When the swelling narrows the mouth of the duct, tears cannot drain into the nose, and the eye waters for a while.

In children, the bones of the face and the nose are still growing. The tear duct is also short and narrow; it lengthens and widens as the face grows. That is why even mild swelling during a cold can easily close the mouth of the duct in children.

In school-age children, most watery eyes are linked to colds or allergies. In a study of 7-year-olds, one of these two causes was found in about 7 out of 10 cases of watery eyes.

Once the cold passes and the swelling inside the nose goes down, the watering usually clears up on its own. If the watering continues after the cold, keeps coming back, or comes with crusting, redness or swelling, have your child seen by an eye doctor.

When should you see a doctor?

  • If there is a red, swollen, painful lump at the inner corner of the eye, or your baby has a fever: see a doctor the same day (it may be an infection of the tear sac).
  • If you notice a bluish, swollen bump just below the inner corner of the eye at birth or in the first days: see a doctor right away. If your baby has trouble feeding or breathing, go to the emergency room.
  • If the white of the eye turns red, the eyelids swell, or the discharge is thick and pus-like.
  • If watering comes with discomfort in light, squeezing the eye shut, or the eye looking cloudy or large: the same day (it may be congenital glaucoma).
  • If watering and crusting continue past age 1, keep coming back, or carry on after a cold has passed.
